Sackville Gardens holds three memorials that no other park in Britain holds together: a bronze of Alan Turing sitting on a bench with an apple in his hand, the Beacon of Hope, the only permanent memorial in the United Kingdom to people living with and lost to HIV and AIDS, and the country&#8217;s first national memorial to transgender people. Summer brings the highest footfall, peaking during Manchester Pride in August, when the park hosts the festival&#8217;s candlelit vigil and the Beacon of Hope becomes the focal point of the weekend. Autumn is the quietest season and the best for photography, with low light on the bronze and leaf colour along the canal. Winter carries the park&#8217;s most significant date: on World AIDS Day, 1 December, the Beacon of Hope is the site of a candlelit vigil, and the park is at its most crowded and most solemn.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Manchester Corporation purchased the land in 1900, and the park \u2014 originally known as Whitworth Gardens \u2014 was laid out to complement the nearby Sackville Street Building. Its modern identity was formed by two memorials erected within a year of each other. The Beacon of Hope came first, in 2000: a decorated steel column designed by Warren Chapman and Jess Boyn-Daniel and dedicated to people living with and lost to HIV and AIDS. It responds to a documented history. Manchester&#8217;s Village was one of the epicentres of the British AIDS crisis of the 1980s, and the city&#8217;s community organised its own care and campaigning: George House Trust, founded in 1985, was among the earliest HIV support charities in the United Kingdom. The Beacon remains the only permanent memorial of its kind in the country, and was restored during 2021 and 2022, when its railings were repainted, its lettering regilded, mosaic tiles replaced and internal lighting repaired. The Alan Turing Memorial followed on 23 June 2001. Turing, born in 1912, broke German ciphers at Bletchley Park during the Second World War and came to the University of Manchester in 1948, where he worked on the Manchester Mark 1, one of the first stored-program computers. In 1952 he was convicted of gross indecency for a relationship with a man and given hormone treatment in place of prison; he died in 1954. The British government apologised in 2009, a royal pardon followed in 2013, and the 2017 law extending pardons to others convicted under the same statutes is known as the Alan Turing law. Sculptor Glyn Hughes placed the statue on a bench so that visitors could sit beside it, and buried an old Amstrad computer beneath it.
