Piccadilly Gardens is the green heart of the city centre, the point where the tram network, the bus interchange and half the city&#8217;s walking routes converge \u2014 and the place Mancunians have been complaining about, with great affection, for a hundred years. It has been a clay pit, a hospital, an empty crater, a sunken Victorian flower garden and a minimalist plaza by a Pritzker Prize winner. Each version has left something behind, which is exactly what makes it worth a slow walk rather than a hurried crossing.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Queen Victoria statue<\/strong> \u2014 sculpted by Edward Onslow Ford and unveiled in 1901, commissioned to mark the Queen&#8217;s sixtieth year on the throne but finished only after her death.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Duke of Wellington memorial<\/strong> \u2014 the work of Matthew Noble, erected in 1856, the oldest of the gardens&#8217; bronzes still in place.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Robert Peel statue<\/strong> \u2014 by William Calder Marshall, put up in 1853 to honour the Bury-born prime minister who repealed the Corn Laws.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The James Watt statue<\/strong> \u2014 by William Theed, dating from 1857, an industrial city&#8217;s tribute to the engineer whose steam engine made it possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The fountain plaza<\/strong> \u2014 the computer-controlled jets installed in the 2002 rebuild, still the single most popular feature with children on a hot day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The transport crossroads<\/strong> \u2014 Metrolink trams and the bus interchange sit directly on the gardens, making this the busiest pedestrian junction in the city.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The gardens today are flat, open and deliberately legible \u2014 the opposite of the enclosed sunken garden they replaced. That openness is the design&#8217;s greatest strength and its most criticised weakness, depending on who you ask.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wide geometric pathways in sandstone and slate, laid out in the 2002 redevelopment.<\/li>\n<li>Large lawns that take heavy use and are regularly re-laid after summer.<\/li>\n<li>Seating clustered around the fountains and along the main desire lines.<\/li>\n<li>Mature street trees on the perimeter, with new planting added under the current transformation scheme.<\/li>\n<li>Four Victorian statues, each with its own plinth and historical inscription.<\/li>\n<li>Direct step-free connections to the Metrolink platforms and the bus stands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Things_to_do_%E2%80%94_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>Things to do \u2014 and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First-time visitors<\/strong> \u2014 the fastest way to orient yourself in central Manchester; almost every walking route begins or ends here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Families<\/strong> \u2014 the fountains are a free water feature in the middle of the city, and a bigger playground is part of the current scheme.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Commuters<\/strong> \u2014 a genuine sit-down between a tram and a bus, rather than a shelter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>History readers<\/strong> \u2014 four statues covering monarchy, politics and engineering within thirty metres of each other.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photographers<\/strong> \u2014 the contrast between Victorian bronze and hard modern paving is the most Mancunian composition in the city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Office workers<\/strong> \u2014 the closest open lawn to the northern half of the central business district.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_practical\"><\/span>Getting there &amp; practical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The gardens sit at the centre of Manchester city centre and are their own transport hub: the Metrolink stop named after them serves several tram lines, and the bus interchange occupies one entire side. Manchester Piccadilly station is about a five-minute walk away, and the Metrolink stop at Market Street is closer still. Entry is free and the gardens are open at all hours, with no gates. Ongoing works under the transformation scheme mean some sections may be fenced off; check before planning a long stop. Fifteen minutes is enough to see the statues; half an hour if you sit by the fountains.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring brings the new planting into its own and the lawns recover from winter, making it the best season for the gardens as a garden rather than a thoroughfare. Summer is when the fountains earn their keep: on a warm afternoon this is where the city&#8217;s children end up, and the grass fills from lunchtime onwards. Autumn is quieter and the low light suits the bronzes, particularly the Wellington and Peel figures on the eastern side. Winter turns the space into a crossing point again, but the Christmas markets that spill through the centre make it one of the busiest and best-lit corners of Manchester in December.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Before 1755 the site was a set of water-filled clay pits known as the Daub Holes. The land was given to the town by Sir Oswald Mosley on condition that it remain in public use in perpetuity \u2014 a clause that has shaped every argument about the space since. The Manchester Royal Infirmary was built here in 1755 and stood until the hospital moved out in 1908; for years afterwards the cleared ground was mocked as the Great Hole of Piccadilly. In the 1930s the city laid out an ornamental sunken garden with formal beds and a fountain, which survived until the end of the century. After the 1996 IRA bomb devastated the city centre, an international competition led to a \u00a320.7 million redevelopment by EDAW with Arup and the Japanese architect Tadao Ando; it opened in 2002, levelling the sunken garden and adding the fountain plaza. Ando&#8217;s concrete wall \u2014 his only built work in the United Kingdom \u2014 attracted years of public hostility, and the free-standing section separating the gardens from the bus station was demolished in 2020.
