Fifty-four acres laid out in 1857 for John Rylands, the most successful cotton merchant England produced, it passed to the town in 1911 and has been public ever since. The hall itself is gone, demolished in 1995, but its porch still stands in the middle of the grass like a doorway to nowhere, and the estate&#8217;s coach house, stables and mature specimen trees survive around it. The result is a park with the bones of a country estate and the facilities of a modern sports ground, on the Stretford and Chorlton boundary.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Longford Hall facade<\/strong> \u2014 the demolished mansion&#8217;s front porch and foundations were kept as a walk-through feature, so you can step into the footprint of a house that no longer exists. A blue plaque to John Rylands was unveiled in 2004 and updated in 2008 to honour his widow Enriqueta as well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trafford Athletic Stadium<\/strong> \u2014 approved by Stretford Council in April 1961, built from 1964, and known variously as Stretford Stadium and Longford Park Stadium. It is the home of Trafford Athletic Club and one of the busiest track venues in the county.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pets&#8217; Corner<\/strong> \u2014 a volunteer-run animal collection with goats, chickens and ducks among its residents, and the single feature most Trafford children remember from the park.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The estate outbuildings<\/strong> \u2014 the coach house and stable range from the Rylands years still stand, giving the park an architectural centre that most municipal parks lack entirely.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The disc golf course<\/strong> \u2014 a full course laid out through the mature parkland trees, one of the few in Greater Manchester and free to play.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The adventure playground<\/strong> \u2014 slides, swings, a zip line and a climbing boulder, grouped in one substantial play area rather than scattered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_youll_find\"><\/span>What you&#8217;ll find<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Longford Park works on two levels at once. The northern and central parts are formal parkland \u2014 wide lawns, veteran trees, the hall site, the bandstand \u2014 while the edges carry a dense band of sport and family facilities. The nearest Metrolink stop is Stretford, on the Altrincham line served by the Green Line between Bury and Altrincham and the Purple Line towards the Etihad Campus; Chorlton stop, on the Pink Line to Rochdale and the Navy Line to the airport, is a longer walk from the eastern side. Rail services reach Stretford&#8217;s neighbouring stations, and frequent buses run along the corridor between Manchester and Sale. There is a car park on site and free on-street parking around the perimeter. Entry is free and the park is open daily; the caf\u00e9, Pets&#8217; Corner and the stadium keep their own hours. Ninety minutes covers a loop with the playground; sports users routinely stay longer.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring brings the park&#8217;s best single sight: the mature specimen trees planted for the Rylands estate coming into leaf over lawns full of crocus and daffodil, with the animals at Pets&#8217; Corner at their most active. Summer is event season \u2014 the lawns host fairs, community days and the wider tradition of the Stretford Pageant, held in the town since 1919 \u2014 and the athletics track is at its busiest. Autumn turns the estate planting spectacular, particularly the beech and horse chestnut around the hall site, and the paths stay firm because the ground is mostly level and well drained. Winter is the park at its most useful rather than its prettiest: parkrun continues, the paths are lit in parts and passable throughout, and the bare trees expose the geometry of the old estate layout.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>John Rylands (1815\u20131888) built Longford Hall and laid out its grounds in 1857, in a style consciously echoing Chatsworth. His firm was called the monarch of the English cotton industry and employed around fifteen thousand people across seventeen mills. He married Enriqueta Augustina Tennant in 1875 and died at the hall in 1888; she used the fortune he left to found the John Rylands Library, which opened in 1899, and she died in 1908. Stretford Urban District Council bought the sixty-three-acre estate in 1911, opened it to the public the following year, and added a further eighteen acres in 1925. In 1977 the park hosted a royal garden party for the Silver Jubilee, attended by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh with more than four thousand guests. Until 1987 the Manchester and Stretford boundary ran straight through the grounds. Wonderful for a walk when the weather is nice! Great coffee and brownies. Friendly and efficient staff. But be careful on the way out of the caf\u00e9, for a person wearing glasses it was a bit dangerous to trip. Twice I was caught out on the spot.
