They also become habitats for fish, amphibians, birds, and other wildlife dependent on water ecosystems.

One such reservoir in Greater Manchester is Hollingworth Lake, located in the town of Littleborough. Created in 1800 as the primary water source for the Rochdale Canal, this man-made lake later became a popular tourist attraction by the mid-19th century, as reported by manchestername.com.

The Creation of the Lake as a Canal Water Source

Hollingworth Lake was constructed in 1800, with the valley of River Ealees chosen as the site for this artificial reservoir. The lake covered 130 acres (53 hectares) and had an average depth of about 10 feet (3 metres). To enclose the reservoir, three large earthen embankments were built.

The lake was completed a few years before the Rochdale Canal itself. Although plans for the canal emerged in 1776, it wasn’t until April 1794 that Parliament approved its construction. The Rochdale Canal Company was subsequently established to oversee the project.

However, local water mill owners initially opposed the canal’s construction, fearing disruptions to their water supply. The construction was delayed due to their resistance.

Despite these concerns, Hollingworth Lake benefited the region’s farmers and facilitated the growth of cotton mills and housing for railway and factory workers around its shores.

Hollingworth Lake Becomes a Tourist Destination

Although originally created for industrial purposes, Hollingworth Lake gradually gained popularity as a tourist attraction. With the establishment of a railway connection between Manchester and Leeds, the lake became even more accessible and appealing.

In the 1850s, Henry Newall, owner of Harehill Woolen Mill, and his engineer, Mr. Sladen, recognised the lake’s recreational potential. They leased the reservoir from the canal company and transformed it into a popular tourist destination.

Newall and Sladen introduced various leisure activities, including rowing. They founded a rowing club and hosted regattas—boat races that became major events.

Steamboats were later added, offering scenic tours of the lake and its surrounding nature. Visitors often stayed for a day or several nights, lodging in hotels like the Beach Hotel and the Lake Hotel and Gardens near the lake.

Over time, more hotels appeared around the reservoir. These establishments included pubs, restaurants, dance halls, gazebos, croquet lawns, and stables for horses. Shops, souvenir stalls, and markets also sprang up, making the area a vibrant hub for leisure and entertainment.

During the 19th century, Hollingworth Lake completely froze over three times—in 1860, 1864, and 1871. This provided opportunities for skating, curling, and even cricket on the ice. Similar freezing events occurred in the 20th century.

The lake was also used for training by Matthew Webb, the first person to swim across the English Channel unaided.

During World War I, the Ealees Valley hosted a training camp for the Manchester Regiment. Families of soldiers lived in hotels and lakeside cottages.

In the interwar years, Hollingworth Lake, along with seven other nearby reservoirs, was purchased by local authorities.

By the 1950s, Hollingworth Lake began regaining its status as a tourist magnet. Visitors could engage in sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, swimming, and rafting. Fishing also became popular after the lake was stocked with carp, tench, roach, and other fish species.

For those preferring a relaxed experience, rowing boats were available for hire, allowing for tranquil explorations of the lake.

Visitors who wanted to stay on land could enjoy walking trails around the lake, which passed through a nearby nature reserve.

In 2023, work began on creating a sensory garden near Hollingworth Lake. This space was designed to engage all human senses—smell, sight, sound, touch, and taste. The garden aimed to offer an immersive experience where visitors could touch, smell, taste, observe, and listen to their surroundings.

The sensory garden was planned for completion and opening in 2024, adding a unique attraction to this historical and recreational landmark.

Artificial lakes, or reservoirs, are human-made bodies of water designed for purposes such as regulating water flow, generating hydroelectric power, fish farming, or recreation.
